Make Sure Your Current Installation is up to Date

$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

If there are any unresolved issues with the upgrade, you may either manually resolve them, or use the following command instead:

$ sudo aptitude full-upgrade

Make Sure Kernel 2.6.32 or Newer is Installed

In the Slicehost Manager, verify kernel 2.6.32.1-rscloud or newer is currently installed. This must be done before upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04.

Install “update-manager-core” Package

$ sudo aptitude install update-manager-core

Verify LTS Upgrade Path

$ sudo nano /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Check that the value for Prompt= is lts. If not, change it.

Start the Upgrade

Note: I recommend that you do this step from the SliceManager console. If you do it over SSH, you will get a warning and have to confirm you want to continue. The upgrade program will start an additional SSH daemon on port 9004. Don’t forget about any firewall rules in place that may prevent access to port 9004.

$ sudo do-release-upgrade

If you get the No new release found error, use the following command instead:

$ sudo do-release-upgrade –devel-release

Follow the on-screen instructions.

You may get several Modified configuration file prompts. You’ll probably want to choose keep_current unless you fully understand what the other choices are.

When the upgrade is complete, you will be prompted to restart. Make sure you restart.
